Judge Says R. Kelly Must Avoid Jackson

CHICAGO (AP) - R. Kelly won't be mingling with Michael Jackson during next month's Grammy festivities: A judge has ordered the R&B star, who is awaiting trial on child pornography charges, to stay away from the King of Pop, himself facing child molestation charges, when Kelly attends the awards. The Chicago-based Kelly has produced two songs for Jackson: the 1995 hit "You Are Not Alone" and last fall's "One More Chance."

Mom Pleads Guilty To Beating, Killing Newborn Son

BALTIMORE -- A mother pleaded guilty Wednesday to beating her 2-month-old son to death. Keisha Carr, 23, of Baltimore, entered her plea Wednesday morning to the second-degree murder of her son, David Allen Carr. The judge sentenced Carr to 30 years in prison, calling the case a “dreadful matter,” according to the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office.

Ex-School Janitor Found Guilty of Molesting 4 Girls

A Marion County jury convicted a former school janitor on five felony child molesting charges early Wednesday morning. James A. Altes, 43, was convicted of having sexual contact with four girls, ages 5 to 11, from 1996 to 2000. Altes could receive up to 124 years in prison, said Roger Rayl, a spokesman for the Marion County prosecutor. Altes is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 20.

Three Charged in Calif. Bank Scheme

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP)--A teenager who was accused two years ago in a $1 million securities fraud scheme has now been charged with conspiring to steal from a local bank. Federal prosecutors say 19-year-old Cole Bartiromo and two friends tried to persuade an employee at a Wells Fargo bank in Mission Viejo last August to let them ``borrow'' all the money in a bank customer's account.

Student Charged With Making Fake IDs

A University of Florida student faces criminal charges for making fake drivers license, police said. Blaine Shelton Patrick, 18, was being held at the Alachua County jail Wednesday on a $5,000 bond. Gainesville Police arrested him Tuesday. Police collected a computer, laminating machine and magnetic strips from the student's home in Beaty Towers, an on-campus housing complex.

There's more legal trouble today for a northeast Ohio minister charged with illegally performing marriage ceremonies. Now Rev. Kevin Eckmeyer, of Tallmadge, is charged with spouse abuse. He allegedly grabbed his wife's thumb and threatened her over a suspected affair.

Swimmer's Jail Term Postponed for Summer Olympics

SONORA, Calif. — A synchronized swimmer's three-month jail term for vehicular manslaughter was postponed so she can compete in the Athens Olympics. Tammy Crow pleaded guilty in the Feb. 16 wreck that killed her two passengers, boyfriend Cody Tatro and 12-year-old Brett Slinger. The three were on their way to a ski resort when Crow lost control of the car.

'Wrestling Death' Teen Leaves Fla. Jail

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Lionel Tate, the teen who killed a 6-year-old playmate at age 12 and became the youngest defendant in the nation to be locked away for life, plans to enjoy his birthday this week like any other 17-year-old. After an appeals court threw out his first-degree murder conviction last month, Tate struck a plea bargain that allowed him to walk out of prison Monday.

Mother Charged With Murder

A DeKalb County woman was charged with murder Monday in the suspected beating death of her 4-year-old daughter. The child, Rita Moody, was the subject of an investigation by child welfare officials at the time of her death, according to a spokesman for the state Department of Human Resources.

LOS ANGELES -- A man who beat two women and bit, cut and dislocated the jaw of a year-old girl was arrested, police said Monday. The toddler was taken to Cedar Sinai Medical Center, where she was in stable condition, said Det. Kenneth White of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southwest Station.

AURORA, Colo. - Former Broncos tight end Clarence Kay was arrested on suspicion of burglary and accused of breaking into a former girlfriend's home and grabbing her as she called 911. Kay, who played for Denver from 1984-92, could face an assault charge because officers saw scrapes on the woman, police spokeswoman Kathleen Walsh said Monday.

Police recovered Nelson's car and arrested 16-year-old Detroit native James Antonio Knott. Knott was charged as an adult with carjacking and armed robbery. Police said Knott remains in custody in lieu of $150,000 cash bond. Lt. McNeilance said it was unlikely that the teen knew Nelson's identity.

WESTBORO, Mass. — A convenience store clerk has been charged with larceny for allegedly snatching a winning $20,000 lottery ticket from a customer's hand and giving her only $100 in return. Quik Mart clerk Antoine Y. Reiche, 34, is scheduled for arraignment Monday. University of Massachusetts freshman Erika Schmitt, 18, told authorities she bought a $2 Lucky Star lottery ticket Monday night and uncovered 10 stars, winning the $20,000 grand prize. Reiche allegedly grabbed the ticket, told her it showed only six stars — a $100 prize winner — and refused to let her see the ticket again.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - A 19-year-old man was charged with tossing a firebomb into the home of witness who was going to testify against the teen in a drug case. Ricky A. Young was being held Sunday without bond at Bay County Jail on charges of arson, retaliation against a witness and manufacturing a firebomb. He was charged Friday.

Junior High Coach Rescued in Porn Ring

MOUNT VERNON -- A Woodlawn junior high school basketball coach, Jarrod L. Griffith, was arrested Friday afternoon in connection with the alleged Jefferson County child-pornography ring. The arrest makes Griffith, of Woodlawn, the sixth man arrested in the past 10 days in the pornography investigation, and police say it doesn't look like the arrests will let up anytime soon.

Powerball Winner Arrested on Drunken Driving Charge

NITRO, W.Va. -- A West Virginia man who won the largest single lottery jackpot in history has been accused of drunken driving on one of the most treacherous days this winter. Jack Whittaker, who hit the $314.9 million Powerball jackpot on Christmas 2002, was arraigned Sunday by a Kanawha County magistrate on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Woman Found Guilty of Stealing $45,000 from MADD

A Will County activist who founded a local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving was convicted Tuesday of stealing more than $45,000 from the group by pocketing fees that would have funded programs for victims of drunk drivers. Antoinette Wilda, 48, started a Will County MADD chapter after her son was killed by a drunken driver in 1993. She faces anywhere from probation to seven years in prison for the felony theft conviction.

LAHAINA, Hawaii - Police say a New Jersey cheerleader who fell to her death from a hotel balcony had a blood-alcohol level more than double the state's legal limit. Police say Lauren Crossan's blood-alcohol content was .18 percent. Hawaii's limit for drivers is .08 percent.

Florida Man Arrested on 99 Child Porn Charges

SANFORD, Fla. - A Seminole County man is being held on 99 counts of possession of child pornography, sheriff's deputies said. Robert B. Corwin, 47, of the Lake Mary area, came under investigation last February when Clearwater police, working an Internet sting, arrested him after he went there for what he thought would be a sexual liaison with a 12-year old boy, said Steve Olson, spokesman for the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

Martha Mantanona of Waukesha is facing two misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing justice for falsely claiming she had been raped Sept. 19 on the Bug Line Trail in Sussex. POTEAU, Okla. -- A Oklahoma teacher accused of raping a 13-year-old female student was officially charged with first-degree rape Tuesday. About 10 members of Jeffrey Dill's family showed up at the arraignment to support Dill, who was a teacher at Pocola Junior High School. Dill is accused of having sex with a 13-year-old girl in the school's annex Friday morning.

A Louisville Metro Police officer has been charged with pulling a gun on a woman Jan. 3 and raping her in front of 9-month-old daughter. Billy Ray White, 45, was arrested on an outstanding warrant this morning at the police offices on Barrett Avenue. He is charged with first-degree rape, terrorist threats and intimidating a witness.

Three volunteer Levittown firefighters were arrested after they pummeled a fellow member of their department outside a bar early Monday, police said. Carmel Police Officer Arrested on Child Molestation Charges

A 28-year veteran Carmel police officer was charged today with 36 counts of child molesting and related charges involving an 11-year-old girl. Officer Paul Terry, 52, a crime lab technician, was being held in the Hamilton County Jail on a $1 million bond. Police say he is considered a flight risk and they have placed him on a "suicide watch" in the jail, where he is segregated away from other inmates.

Mother Charged in Death of Boy Found in Apartment

A 3-year-old boy was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center early yesterday, and by midafternoon his mother had been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Authorities said the naked body of Hassani Berry was found in the hallway of a North Toledo apartment, his body cold to the touch of city firefighters who tried to resuscitate him.

EDINBORO, Pa. - A 17-year-old boy was charged with stabbing his father to death and slashing his younger brother with a butcher knife Sunday, authorities said. FORT LAUDERDALE β€” An Olympic Heights High School employee has been charged with drug trafficking, rekindling disappointment at a school that two months ago lost a top administrator to similar charges. Federal agents found more than 200 boxes of illegal prescription drugs in the Broken Sound home of Nelly Maria Munoz, a 44-year-old Spanish translator at the school. She got the drugs, including the "date rape" drug Rohypnol, in Mexico, she said.

A Merced elementary school playground supervisor was arrested Thursday after confessing to secretly photographing girls in a school restroom using a cell phone, police said. Arturo Sanchez Abarca, 22, used a cell phone with camera capabilities to photograph at least two children in the girls’ bathroom stalls at Luther Burbank Elementary School on East Alexander Avenue, according to police.

15 Arrested in New Jersey in Child Pornography Inquiry

NEWARK, Jan. 15 - The operators of a global Internet child pornography service that stretched from Eastern Europe to Mount Laurel, N.J., were indicted on Thursday, and federal and state authorities arrested 15 people in New Jersey who subscribed to the service. Law enforcement agencies in New Jersey, as well as immigration and postal service officials, collaborated for more than a year on an investigation that focused on a Belarus-based company, Regpay Ltd. The authorities said Regpay operated about 50 child pornography Web sites. The company billed subscribers more than $3 million, according to the federal indictment unsealed Thursday.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Authorities trying to build a case against a suspected serial killer said Wednesday that a length of telephone cord found near one murder victim matches cord in the home of another woman who was attacked but survived. Sgt. David Smith of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said at a hearing for suspect Derrick Todd Lee that the cord was found on a gravel drive leading to the body of Pam Kinamore of Baton Rouge.

Another Shooting in Ohio Cracks Car Windshield

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - A bullet cracked a car windshield over the weekend in the latest in a string of 19 shootings on or near a stretch of Ohio highway, police said on Wednesday. The motorist driving on I-270 was not injured in Sunday's incident, and he immediately called police on a cell phone. But police once again came up empty in the search for the culprit who has been shooting at vehicles, a school and homes in the area south of Columbus since May.

HOUSTON (AP) - Andrew Fastow, chief architect of the off-the-books deals that brought down Enron, pleaded guilty along with his wife Wednesday in a deal that could take prosecutors to the top of the corporate ladder at the scandal-ridden company. The former finance chief agreed to a 10-year prison sentence and will help prosecutors build a case against the executives who once occupied the most opulent offices on the company's top floor: former chairman Kenneth Lay and former CEO Jeffrey Skilling.

DENVER (AP) - There is no way to hold public court hearings on the medical records of Kobe Bryant's alleged sexual assault victim without violating her privacy rights, lawyers for the prosecution and the woman say in court filings. Man Charged In Alleged Sexual Assault On Dog

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A man in West Palm Beach, Fla., faces charges after he was caught sexually assaulting a neighbor's dog, according to Palm Beach County deputies. Officials said William McPhillips, 50, a registered sex offender, sexually assaulted a young mixed-breed dog. A caretaker at McPhillips' group home saw the attack, deputies said.

Songwriter Hugh Prestwood Arrested

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. - Country music songwriter Hugh Prestwood was arrested after a loaded gun was found in his carry-on luggage at Long Island MacArthur Airport, police said. Woman Who Masterminded Kidnap of Son Sentenced

INDIO, Calif. — A woman who helped plan the violent abduction of her 9-year-old son from his father's home during a bitter custody dispute has been sentenced to five years in prison. Rose and her boyfriend, 49-year-old Michael Riley, paid two men to snatch Nicholas Farber from his father's home in August 2002. Police found the boy disguised in girl's clothing two days later at a San Diego County campground with Rose and Riley.

Suspect in slayings is caught with girls

RANGER, Ga. - A jealous ex-husband shot three former in-laws to death with a rifle and strangled his infant daughter, then kidnapped three girls and fled in a stolen sport utility vehicle, authorities said Thursday. The suspect, Jerry William Jones, shot himself in the face, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said. He was in critical condition, said Jan Powell, a spokeswoman with Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn. The three girls were in good condition and were staying at the hospital overnight for observation, she said.

Man Charged With Raping Teen

A former child-care worker at a Valley Stream home for troubled girls was arrested yesterday on a charge of having sexual relations in October 2002 with a 14-year-old girl who lived at the home, Nassau police said. Scott Frazier, 32, was arraigned yesterday in First District Court in Hempstead on a charge of second-degree rape. He was released without bail.

Yalobusha County authorities arrested two Tillatoba residents Friday in connection with the death of a newborn. Billy Bonner and Kassie Beckham were taken into custody in Tillatoba after an investigation implicated the two in the December 29 death of one-month-old Angelena Noami Beckham, according to Yalobusha County Sheriff Steve Shuffield.

An Aurora man was arrested Tuesday in connection with two Nebraska murders more than 20 years ago. Louis Mcque Walker, 46, was being held without bond at the Arapahoe County Jail on Thursday. He faces two counts of first-degree murder. Walker also has gone by the name of Abdulmalik Husain.

Man who shot intruder arrested

First, a Chicago man was charged with burglarizing a Wilmette man's home twice. Now the Wilmette homeowner, who shot the intruder, is charged with firearms violations. On Thursday, Hale DeMar, 54, was arrested for allegedly violating the North Shore suburb's ordinance banning handgun ownership. DeMar also was charged with failing to renew his Illinois firearm owner's identification card, which expired in 1988.

Ga. Slayings Suspect, 3 Girls Found Alive

RANGER, Ga. (AP) - A manhunt across the Southeast ended late Thursday when a tip led authorities to a jealous ex-husband who allegedly killed three former in-laws and his infant daughter, then fled with three girls. The girls were found safe, and the suspect shot himself in the face after a police chase on Interstate 75 near the Tennessee line. Authorities said he was hospitalized in critical condition.

Scott Peterson Case Moved Out of Modesto

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - A judge ruled Thursday that accused murderer Scott Peterson cannot get a fair trial in his dead wife's hometown and ordered the case moved out of the county. Judge Al Girolami said extensive news coverage of the case, including 8,000 articles published worldwide and more than 150 stories in the local newspaper alone, swayed him to agree with the defense that the trial should not be held in Modesto. He did not immediately say where the trial would be held.

Cops Believe Suspected Murderer Kidnapped Kids

RANGER, Ga. — A search is underway for a Georgia man who is believed to have kidnapped three girls and killed four people including his own infant daughter, authorities said Thursday Gordon County Sheriff's spokesman Clent Harris said a murder warrant had been issued for 31-year-old Jerry William Jones. Hubert Pack, the brother-in-law of one of the victims, told Fox News that the trouble started when the children were taken away from Jones by family services for being an unfit parent, and put in the custody of one of the people found killed.

Man Arrested After Crushing Cottage With Stolen Car

PLYMOUTH, Mass. -- A man suspected of crashing a stolen car through a small cottage in Dennis and pushing its sleeping occupant from his bed has been arrested. State Police say Thomas Salamone of Yarmouth was arrested at a CVS Pharmacy on Route 3-A in Plymouth Wednesday. Authorities say Salamone was driving a stolen car that crashed through the cottage early Tuesday morning. Ellis Tomas was thrown from the bed into a parking lot. He suffered minor injuries.

MIAMI — The mother of a Florida teen who beat a 6-year-old playmate to death said neither she nor her son is happy with the terms of a plea deal yet chose to accept it simply so he could have freedom. Lionel Tate, 16, signed papers Sunday agreeing to plead guilty to second-degree murder in the 1999 beating death of Tiffany Eunick. Tate could be freed by the end of the month from a maximum security juvenile prison in Okeechobee.

Grand County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a 28-year old Salt Lake City woman for the murder of her 2 and a half year old daughter. The child was found inside Wendy Bullock's car yesterday on Interstate 70 near Thompson Springs. Bullock had approached another motorist, asking him for razor blades and saying she wanted to kill herself.

SAN DIEGO -- Three North County men were under arrest Sunday for their alleged involvement in an identity-theft ring that stole personal information by using a fake Web site on the Internet, a sheriff's spokesperson said Sunday. CHICAGO - Despite a sharp drop in homicides, Chicago has regained a title it didn't want: America's murder capital. The city finished 2003 with 599 homicides, police said Thursday. That was down from 648 a year earlier and the first time since 1967 that the total dipped below 600.

Brian Finkel, a once prominent Phoenix abortion doctor, was sentenced to more than 34 years in prison Friday for sexually abusing patients over a span of nearly two decades in his high-profile practice. Calif. Prosecutor Opposes Venue Change for Peterson

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Prosecutors asked a judge on Friday to deny accused double murderer Scott Peterson's request to move his upcoming trial from his hometown of Modesto in central California, saying it was Peterson's own lawyer who was generating the negative publicity in the case. Teen's Lawyer Says Mother OKs Plea Deal

MIAMI (AP) - The mother of a teenager who once received a life sentence for murdering a 6-year-old playmate has approved a plea bargain that could allow the boy to be released in the next month, an attorney said Wednesday. Richard Rosenbaum, Lionel Tate's attorney, said the teenager had been awaiting his mother's approval and estimated his client could be released from prison by Jan. 29.
