Parents of Baby Girl With Burns Are Arrested

The teenage parents of a 6-month-old girl have been charged with assault after she was found at a homeless shelter in Harlem on Monday with cigarette burns in her eye and on her back, the police said. The parents, Katrina Allen and William Butts, both 18, were arrested on Monday night at the shelter, at 30 Hamilton Place, and charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

FBI Joins Search for Girl Seen on Tape

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - The FBI joined the search Tuesday for an 11-year-old girl whose apparent abduction was videotaped by a car wash surveillance camera, and the youngster's parents pleaded for her safe return. "Please release Carlie. Please give me my baby," begged Carlie Brucia's mother, Susan Schorpen. The sixth-grader was seen on videotape being led away by a man as she took a shortcut behind a closed car wash on her way home from a friend's house Sunday night.

Ricin Discovery Closes 3 Senate Buildings

WASHINGTON (AP) - Three Senate office buildings were closed Tuesday after a suspicious white powder, apparently delivered through the mail system, was found in the Senate majority leader's office. Officials said several preliminary tests - but not all of them - were positive for ricin, a deadly poison. More definitive test results were expected later Tuesday. "This is a criminal action," said Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn., whose staff discovered the white powder in their Dirksen Senate Office Building mailroom Monday afternoon.

Key Witness to Speak at Stewart Trial

NEW YORK (AP) - A key government witness is expected to take the stand today in the Martha Stewart trial. Prosecutors say former Merrill Lynch brokerage assistant Douglas Faneuil was told to pass on an illegal tip to Stewart about her shares in ImClone Systems. Stewart is accused of concocting a false story with her stockbroker that they had a pre-existing agreement to sell her ImClone Systems stock if it fell below $60.

Officials Seize Papers at Jackson Ranch

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Newly released court documents include a long list of items seized at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch but no hints about how they could fit into the criminal case against the pop superstar. Investigators who searched the northern Santa Barbara complex on Nov. 18 seized computers, legal documents, videotapes, and a note and letter found on the singer's bedroom nightstand, according to the documents released Monday. There were no details about the items, such as what the written materials said.

Bryant Investigators Called to Testify

EAGLE, Colo. (AP) - Investigators who questioned Kobe Bryant after he allegedly assaulted a 19-year-old hotel worker are being put on the defensive as the NBA star's lawyers seek to have key evidence thrown out. The sheriff's investigators were scheduled to testify in court Tuesday about the circumstances surrounding a 75-minute interview they conducted with Bryant at the Lodge & Spa at Cordillera.

No Cameras Allowed in Scott Peterson Trial

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Cameras won’t be allowed in the courtroom during Scott Peterson’s double-murder trial, a judge ruled Monday during a brief hearing that ended with another delay in the case. Peterson told Judge Alfred A. Delucchi he accepted as "a regrettable necessity" a request to postpone the trial’s start by at least a week because his attorney is defending another murder suspect.

Witness Tells of Martha Stewart Call

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A "hurried and harsh" Martha Stewart called ImClone Systems Inc. the day of her suspicious stock trade and demanded to know what was happening at the biotech company, a former executive assistant testified in court on Monday. Emily Perret, ImClone founder Sam Waksal's onetime assistant, told jurors that Stewart called the company's offices in late December 2001 and ordered her to "Get Sam" in her normally abrupt tone of voice.

Two Arrested In Couple's Stabbing Deaths

INDIANAPOLIS -- Police said Sunday they arrested two people in connection with last week's slayings of an east-side Indianapolis couple. Linden Cornewell, 23, and a teenage male were being held in connection with the deaths of Mayra Perez Gonzales, 48, and Manuel Gonzales, 49.

Man Arrested in String of Upper East Side Attacks

Police have arrested a Queens man they claim is responsible for a string of sexual assaults and robberies involving several victims on the Upper East Side. Investigators are also trying to determine if he is involved in other cases. Police got a big break in this case from the victims because they paid attention and knew the face of their attacker. All the victims have ID'd him in lineups. And, police seem confident, they have their man.

Inmate Brandishes Gun in Prison Standoff

BUCKEYE, Ariz. — A female corrections officer held hostage in a prison guard tower for two weeks seems to be holding up well even as her inmate captors displayed a weapon for the first time, officials said Sunday. Officials haven't made public the inmate's demands, but Cam Hunter, a Corrections Department spokeswoman, acknowledged that it's reasonable to assume the pair are asking for more than just necessities. She would not elaborate.

Second Caller Threatens to Attack Ohio Cops

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A day after announcing that a 911 caller had claimed responsibility for a string of highway shootings, investigators said Saturday that a second man has stepped forward and threatened to attack police officers. Investigators say they believe the man who called early Saturday morning is different from the man who repeatedly called 911 on Monday to claim responsibility for 20 shootings at cars, school buses and homes on or near a section of Interstate 270.

Wis. Woman Feared Abducted Found Alive

WHEELING, Ill. (AP) - A woman was found wrapped in duct tape and inside a plastic garbage can in her ex-husband's storage unit Sunday, a day after she called 911 from the back of his truck saying he had abducted her. Teri Jendusa-Nickolai, 38, was hurt, Wheeling Deputy Police Chief John Stone, but he did not release the extent of her injuries. She was taken to a local hospital, village spokesman James Lang said.
